Design Legacy
Why it endures
Released on NBC's *Home* show in 1956, the chair was the Eameses' first design for the high-end market. They famously aimed for the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." It utilized their pioneering molded plywood technology, bending wood in three dimensions—a feat previously thought impossible.
Timelessness
It is a permanent resident of MoMA and hasn't changed in nearly 70 years. The tilt is permanently fixed at a 15-degree angle, which the Eameses determined was the perfect position for rest. It is arguably the most famous chair of the 20th century.
Did You Know?
The chair achieves its floating comfort through rubber shock mounts that connect the shells. Charles Eames developed a method to bond rubber to wood, a technology he originally invented for the US Navy to make splints during WWII.
