Womb Chair

Designed by Eero Saarinen. One of the closest things to sitting in a cloud. The Womb Chair was born from a request for a chair to "curl up in." Its enveloping form invites a range of sitting postures, providing a sense of psychological security and physical comfort that few chairs can match.

Design Legacy

Why it endures

Designer / EraEero Saarinen (1948)

Florence Knoll famously challenged Saarinen to create "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows... something I could really curl up in." Saarinen turned to a boat builder to help him mold the fiberglass shell, a material that was brand new to the furniture industry. It was the first chair designed to accommodate the "restless sitter".

Timelessness

Its organic, enveloping form offers a psychological sense of safety and comfort, a "womb-like" escape from the hard edges of modern architecture. It is a piece of sculpture you can live in.

Did You Know?

Saarinen originally begged a boat builder to help him create the fiberglass shell because traditional furniture manufacturers told him the complex curves were impossible to mass produce.
